3.26.13 - RA’s Daily Russia News Blast – March 26, 2013 via Robert Amsterdam - Mike Nova: excellent review! | other news

via Robert Amsterdam by Citizen M on 3/26/13
260313TODAY: Berezovsky death ‘consistent with hanging’, suspicions remain; Amnesty offices searched; Putin backs Cyprus bailout deal; Gazprom firm on Ukraine prices; China’s new energy deals; Zhirinovsky re-elected.
According to the postmortem examination, the cause of Boris Berezovsky’s death was ‘consistent with hanging, and ruled out the possibility of a violent struggle, but as RFE/RL notes, the police statement did not specify whether Berezovsky hanged himself. Luke Harding discusses the suspicions that nonetheless remain with the oligarch’s friends and family, who suspect that he was murdered: close friend Nikolai Glushkov has dismissed reports of Berezovsky’s alleged depression and financial problems, saying, ‘the idea that he would have taken his own life is bullshit’. The Moscow Times says that Berezovsky may have been a scapegoat, but that his villainous reputation was not unfounded. ‘Since Berezovsky’s departure for London in 2000, he has been demonized by the Kremlin as the antithesis of everything Putin stands for. But the truth is that they were once patron and protege, master and apprentice.’ Yevgeny Kiselyov discusses the relationship between Putin and ‘Yeltsin’s kingmaker’ in more detail. Vadim Nikitin says Berezovsky ‘produced his own gravediggers’. Prosecutors searched the Moscow headquarters of Amnesty International yesterday, part of what many opposition members are calling an ongoing campaign of pressure against rights organisations; Amnesty called the raid ‘straightforward intimidation’.
Cyprus and the European Union have reached a bailout deal which, argues theWashington Post, could be bad news for Russia in a deal that ‘was a sort of stand-off between Moscow and the E.U.’ over which of Cyprus’ benefactors would benefit most. But Vladimir Putin has decided to back the deal, despite disgruntled rhetoric from some officials, and Anders Aslund argues that ‘Cyprus is Russia’s only true friend in the global arena’. As part of the deal, which will impose a levy on major deposits held in Cypriot banks (affecting rich Russians who have bank accounts there), Russia will restructure the €2.5 billion loan it extended to the country two years ago. Gazprom has reiterated that it will not give any ground in its price dispute with Ukraine. Bloomberg has a breakdown of some of the deals brokered between Russia and China during President Xi Jinping’s trip, including doubling imports from Rosneft, and China National Petroleum Corp joining Rosneft in exploring offshore Arctic areas for oil.
Organisers of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics are reportedly storing snow in case of a lack next February. Vladimir Zhirinovsky has been re-elected leader of the Liberal Democratic Party to continue a role already spanning over two decades. Over69,000 new cases of HIV were registered in Russia last year.

“negative trends” emanating from Russia - via homophobia russia - Google News

...
And the demographic clincher: 81 per cent of American adults under 30 back full equality. The opposition, concentrated among seniors, is dying away.
But as Americans drive the issue home, the question of what it means to the bigger world is emerging. The answer? Perhaps not as much as hoped.
“The sheer speed of change in America is astonishing. But translating that into progress elsewhere remains daunting because the very thing that moved Americans — the argument of basic human rights and fairness — tends to backfire in many other parts of the world,” says Evelyne Paradis, executive director of ILGA Europe, a major LGBT advocacy group.
Paradis, a Montrealer, works in partnership with grassroots gay-rights organizations in more than 40 countries, largely against “negative trends” emanating from Russia. She describes a pattern of rising support for homophobic groups throughout the former Soviet Union, aided by overseas outreach from a loose network of Christian evangelical organizations.
“In the past year we’ve really begun to connect the dots. In Ukraine last spring for our Day Against Homophobia, we saw busloads of people arriving for counter-demonstrations, chanting religious slogans and extreme right-wing political slogans from Russia. We see a similar pattern in Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and, of course, in Russia.”
...
Groups like the U.S.-based Alliance Defending Freedom, says Paradis, have established a foothold in Europe to advocate strongly against abortion and LGBT rights.
“The problem for national LGBT activists is that if they raise the human rights argument that has been so powerful in America, it gets thrown back in their faces — ‘You are just part of the western world, forcing outside values on us,’” she says.
“The human rights argument works — but it works where a culture of human rights has been built over decades and people have slowly gotten used to what the concept of equality means, whether on racism or from a women’s perspective.
“In places like Georgia and Armenia, the activists can’t talk about human rights. They tell us, ‘People don’t get it, they don’t care, they don’t understand these arguments.’
“They have much more success in getting through to people by reclaiming the language of the home country — talking about family, values, tradition and redefining those ideas as empowered national voices, coming from within, rather than from outside. That’s where we see some real hope that attitudes can change for the better.”
...
But gay-rights campaigners also point to glimmers beyond the grim. In Venezuela, the battle to succeed Hugo Chavez includes this pronouncement from candidate Henrique Capriles: “I believe in a society without exclusion . . . where no one feels excluded by race, creed, social status, sexual orientation.”
...
But nothing quite captured the shifting zeitgeist like Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Mitt Romney’s old debate coach, who stunned his fellow Republicans with a full-throated endorsement of marriage equity last week, revealing in the same breath that his son Will is gay. That simple fact “prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective,” Portman wrote in The Columbus Dispatch. “That of a dad who wants all three of his kids to lead happy, meaningful lives with the people they love.”
Portman’s declaration baffled many on the right and met with a bashing from many on the left, who labelled his reasoning “selfish.” But the Portman saga, perhaps more than any other, mirrors the million-plus points of light that have shifted so many American attitudes, sister by sister, son by son, brother by brother.
...
“This is a long game, but an important game. We’re not saying Canada should do this on its own. But with major partners that know this work . . . the opportunity is there to let our public servants do the good work they trained for at the precise moment it is most needed.”
Mitch Potter’s last World Weekly story was on N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Pope Francis, who met with representatives of a dozen faiths Wednesday, speaking with Metropolitan Hilarion.

An envoy of the Russian Orthodox Church has met with Pope Francis at the Vatican, where he presented him with the Mother of God icon and expressed hope that ties between the two churches would continue to improve, the Orthodox Church's official website said.
During the meeting on Wednesday, Hilarion Alfeyev, the metropolitan of Volokolamsk and chairman of the Department of External Church Relations of the Patriarchate of Moscow, extended warm greetings and gratitude for prayers from Patriarch Kirill, saying the head of the Russian church had closely followed the election and enthronement of the new pope.
Alfeyev presented the Pope Francis with a Spanish edition of Patriarch Kirill's book, titled "Freedom and Responsibility," and a gift from the Russian Orthodox Church: an image of the Mother of God icon, called "Look Down With Favor on My Lowliness."
He noted that Pope Francis' "first steps after the election were marked by lowliness and humility," Interfax reported. Pope Francis replied that he lacked humility and asked for prayers to grant it to him.
Alfeyev said that the Moscow Patriarchate shared Pope Francis' concern for the poor and suffering, and that this shared compassion creates new opportunities for cooperation between the two churches.
He informed the pope of existing problems between the two churches and said he hoped that the inter-church relations that improved under Pope Benedict XVI would further strengthen.

"...two men holding hands in public are not a threat any more than anal sex with a woman in partially a homosexual act. There are at least twenty gender differentiations in the species. You can’t vote any away." - 25 Jan 2013 by Daniel

Russian Homophobia

The news was filled today with the vote in the democratic gulag called the Kremlin that all but one vote was caste to bring into law restrictions on minorities which will impact the gay and lesbian community. A deeply conservative move backed and promoted by the Russian Orthodox Church.
We shouldn’t be surprised.
When the Berlin wall came down one of the recurrent themes of the commentators on the newly emerging countries was that they were stuck with pre-second-world war value systems. Still infected with anti-semitic leanings, still male dominated and they broke down into the ‘strong man’ leaders who had been the bullies of the communist regime hiding out in the secret police.
Russia will pull out the doldrums but it will take a while and while it does so the church will make people’s lives hell because that is what the narrow thinking of biblical bigots always does. Enlightenment is not about facts and figures and the sudden inrush of scientific illumination, but the understanding that compassion glues society together more strongly that religion. That two men holding hands in public are not a threat any more than anal sex with a woman in partially a homosexual act.
There are at least twenty gender differentiations in the species. You can’t vote any away.
