The Trump comedy: Putin to invest in America?

•Among the winners of MoveOn.org’s national “Laughter Trumps Hate” humor contest was best comedy sketch, “Trumpamerica,” by Brian PariseSteven CartoccioJL Cauvin and Janelle James. In this animation, a newly elected President Trump has sold the Louisiana Purchase (“such a terrible deal”) to Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader appears on horseback and bare-bottomed. Although he’s been pictured bare-chested before, the horse is said to “prefer it” this way.
•Meanwhile, Chris Beaudoin forwarded a link to a sitcom election riff. The actors who were in “Will & Grace” have gotten together again to perform in a 10-minute skit about the election. Says Karen (played by Megan Mullally), “Donny is one of my oldest friends. I helped him pick out Melania.”
•In other political/entertainment news, the website Pornhub.com reports that across the United States, during the first presidential debate, its traffic fell by 16 percent.

In Dogpatch one afternoon last week, I spent an hour or so ensconced in the Adobe studio at 1240 Minnesota. That’s the building that houses 35 artists’ studios, right across the street from the collection of galleries open to the public. Both sites are part of the Minnesota Street Project, which founders Deborah and Andrew Rappaport created, by their own description, as “affordable and economically sustainable spaces for art galleries, artists and related nonprofits.”
The formerly industrial building is a vast, skylit space, but you don’t walk in to a giant sun-drenched area. Rough-hewn plywood partitions and walls separate the studios. Many artists have posted small drawings or images to indicate what kind of work they’re doing, but on the quiet afternoon I was there, most doors were closed. Communal areas nestled into clearings between corridors outside the studios are equipped with artists’ tools: a wood shop, kiln and more.
Adobe, a computer software company headquartered in San Jose, plays a key financial role in this. As a tenant in a not-large space, it pays a rent much much higher than that paid by the artists. It’s this support that allows artists, each of whom has a five-year lease, to rent the space at low rates. But the role the company is playing is creative, too: inviting artists (not proselytizing, but inviting) to make use of its technological wonders.
In the Adobe studio, artist/designer/programmer Erik Natzke was exploring space and color with virtual reality. His stated aim, which I found online afterward: “To create and give material substance to his ideas through immaterial computer code.” Natzke’s spoken description of artists making use of VR was followable. but I was beginning to stagger in the tech blizzard when he held out a pair of wands, showed me which buttons controlled what and gently lowered the helmet onto my head.
It was intoxicating, like making 3-D graffiti, finger painting and skywriting all at once. In a thicket of streaks and strokes, I swirled and swiveled until I bumped into a wall. I am an amateur, so it was hard to resist the impulse to get out and look at what I’d “painted” with the wands. At the same time, I realized that was like looking at pictures of oneself dancing: not the point. For an artist creating a work for others, the point may be the result, but for me, the point was the dancing itself.
At the end of our visit, I scribbled down the description of Adobe’s work by the company’s Courtney Brigham, who called it “the interstition of analogue and digital.” Writing this the morning after, I have no idea what that means. No matter.

•Having read herein of Prince Charles’ complaints about electronic correspondence, Bo Wredendirects our attention to Salutations: The Society of Conventional Correspondence, which had its first meeting at Green Apple Books on the Park on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
About 30 people showed up, nine of them reading aloud personal letters, says Green Apple’s Emily Ballaine. The subject of this first session was Beginnings. Among the readings was a missive from its reader’s husband’s ex-girlfriend.
The next society meeting, on Nov. 30, will focus on Going (travel letters).

Gingrich Scolds Trump: ‘You Can’t Tweet at 3:00 in the Morning. Period.’

gingrichNewt Gingrich is all-in for Donald Trump, except on those days when he decides to get brutally honest about him. And today was one of those days.
As far as Gingrich is concerned (and maybe Sean Hannity a little too, though he didn’t express as much angst), Trump needs to quit the nonsense about Alicia Machado and act like a serious candidate:
“You can’t tweet at 3:00 in the morning. Period. There’s no excuse. Ever. Not if you’re gonna be president of the United States. So he’s really gotta decide… If he’s gotta be himself, then he may well not win. If he’s willing to grow into the role of president, than he may win.”
Hannity did not date criticize Trump directly––he only said that this week has been “frustrating” because of the media double standards.
Gingrich agreed that this was a media ambush (and warned that during the next debate, Anderson Cooper will be “viscerally, deeply opposed to Trump), but said Trump has to make the decision himself that “saving America and making America great again is worth his subordinating himself to the difficult process of becoming President of the United States.”
This is all, by the way, in spite of Gingrich going ahead and defending Trump on the Machado controversy by literally saying, “You are not supposed to gain 60 pounds the year you’re Miss Universe.”

Donald Trump’s New Hotel Was Hit With ‘Black Lives Matter’ Graffiti

Donald Trump’s International Hotel in Washington, D.C., was vandalized over the weekend, according to reports. Someone spray-painted the phrase “Black Lives Matter” on the facade of the the luxury hotel, which is positioned along Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Washington.
A Twitter user posted a video of a person appearing to spray paint the building on Saturday afternoon.
Later, he posted a photo of the finished product.
CNN reports the graffiti was quickly being covered up by plywood and no arrests had been made.
Trump has been criticized throughout the campaign for his approach to racial issues. During last week’s presidential debate, the candidate drew backlash over his call for “law and order” and nationwide stop & frisk policies in response to a question about mending the country’s racial divide. The candidate has also been criticized for being a vocal member of the birther movement that incorrectly called into question the legitimacy of the nation’s first black president.
